The high school is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Atlanta and has become yet another scene of one of those ghastly events that have shaken the community.
The Brief
-
- Multiple people were injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School.
- The school is located about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
- One person is in custody.
- Grady Memorial Hospital confirmed they have received one gunshot victim.
- Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement.
- President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting.
That was at around 10:30 a.m. when law enforcement agencies were called down for active shooter reports at the school premises, like the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. The incident was developing very fast and required an immediate, coordinated response by several first responders. The scene, captured from the air by hovering helicopters, shows students and staff gathered on the football field of the school as medics work to treat the injured as quickly as possible. At least two people could be seen being loaded into a medical helicopter and ambulance, showing just how grave it was.
Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta confirmed they received at least one gunshot victim from the incident. How many were injured is not yet clear, as no detailed information about their condition has been provided so far. Neither was the identity of the suspect apprehended released. This would leave a lot unsaid as the investigations get deeper.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said in brief remarks that it would be days before motives and circumstances of the tragic incident were fully known. The FBI and GBI have joined local officials in investigating the incident, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
The incident did not just stop at Apalachee High School, as a nearby school to it, Winder-Barrow High School, was put under brief hard lockdown, given the precautionary measures in place. There were no reported threats at that location, and thus the lockdown was lifted after the situation at Apalachee High School had been brought under control.
As the news of the shooting spread, both Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and President Joe Biden received briefings on the situation. Governor Kemp issued a statement, showing his concern and support for the community affected by the incident; the White House corroborated that the President had been informed and that federal, state, and local officials were coordinating their efforts with regard to this tragedy.
Apalachee High is home to approximately 1,900 students and one of two high schools that serve the Barrow County Public Schools system. Now, the school has become the center of a national discussion on school safety as parents and community members struggle to come to terms with the shock and grief caused by such a senseless act of violence.
As the investigation continues to unfold, the community of Winder and the greater area must begin to process the trauma and come to grips with some answers. Undeniably, the days ahead will also bring more information, but as it stands now, the need to make sure the victims and their families and the whole Apalachee High School community are supported after the tragedy remains paramount.
